SCC News Summary 2023

Back to Seattle Coin Club!

The club resumed using the name "Seattle Coin Club" in January 2023, 20 years after the SNS was formed.

Meeting Date & Location

The SCC returned to in-person meetings at the Tukwila Community Center, still on the second Thursday of each month!

New meeting location: Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave S, Tukwila, WA. The meeting time is now from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., due to staff shortages and early closing on most weeknights. Also see the calendar page, and mark your calendar accordingly.

Previous meeting location (Dec. 2021 to Aug. 2022): Angelo’s Restaurant banquet room, Burien, WA. The second Thursday of each month was the regular meeting day, with meetings starting at 6:30 p.m.

The club returned to year-round meetings, effective November-December 2019. There may be an off-site banquet, usually each February (but not in 2019-2023). Banquet information can be found on the banquet page.

2023 Meeting Programs:

  • We're pleased to report that every month this year featured (or features) an in-person meeting at the Tukwila Community Center from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

  • December 14, 2023 - The table topic was Religions. The educational program was "Thalers (or Talers)," the early German state coinage from which the word dollar is derived, by David E. In the 16th and 17th centuries, beautiful and ornate thalers dominated the silver currency of Germany.

  • November 9, 2023 - The table topic was Sports, and there were seven displays. The educational program was Dan V. on "Civil War Coinage." Over the years Dan has become an authoritative expert on all things related to the Civil War so this should have been a very informative presentation.

  • October 12, 2023 - The table topic was Aviation. The educational presentation was David H. on "Spanish Colonial Cobs: A Most Unlikely Collectible."

  • September 14, 2023 - The table topic was Native Culture. The educational presentation was Ray Fiorini on "Goschenhoppen wooden nickels."

  • August 10, 2023 - The table topic was Mountains. Both club President Rick Schulz and Treasurer Scott Loos were in Pittsburgh at the ANA World's Fair of Money. While they were away Dan Vornbrock filled in admirably, welcoming all of those in attendance including one guest.

  • July 13, 2023 - The table topic was Reptiles. The meeting was lightly attended, only four members, each of whom had a table topic display. The displays included reptiles, for example the famous Mexican eagle/snake emblem on its coinage, but also new acquisitions such as an 1861 banknote from the Timber Cutter's Bank of Savanna, Georgia, recently acquired at an Olympia Coin Club auction.

  • June 8, 2023 - The table topic was South America.

  • May 11, 2023 - The table topic was Plants/Flowers, and the speaker was Bernus T. on "Misunderstood 1883/2 Shield Nickel." Special acknowledgements were given to David Edge for doing an excellent job creating our You Tube Channel and being the club’s official videographer! And to Jeff Pritchard for speaking at the Central States Coin Show in Chicago, in conjunction with Newman Numismatic Portal Educational programming. His topic, "You Can't Take It With You," addressed estate and tax issues around collecting. The presentation is available on the NNP. Here is the link: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/626957.

  • April 13, 2023 - The table topic was Aviation, and the guest speaker was Jeff Shevlin, "The So-Called Dollar Guy." For the past several years, Jeff has been writing new books on So-Called Dollars, that have expanded the knowledge base of this interesting niche of numismatics. This meeting was held the evening before the annual PNNA Convention, also at the Tukwila Community Center. Jeff was a dealer at the show, and customers could order his latest book. Jeff's presentation was recorded by David Edge: search for "Seattle Coin Club Presentation - Jeff Shevlin on So-Called Dollars" on YouTube.

  • March 9, 2023 - Dan V. filled in for President Rick Schulz while he was in Arizona following the ANA National Money Show. Dan and dealer Scott L. spoke briefly about their experiences at the ANA show. The table topic was Ships. Speaker: Jeff P., about "Seated Liberty Quarters." An educational video was shown by David E.

  • February 9, 2023 - The table topic was Couples. Speaker: David E., about "Disneyland Medallions." The club welcomed guests Dave H. and Joe V.

  • January 12, 2023 - The table topic was Ocean Life. This was the first meeting after restoring the Seattle Coin Club name. See the group photo above. The club welcomed two guests: Steve I. and BSA scout Michael K., who came with Dan V. There were eight participants in the table topics.
